Painting vs Galvanising

DICTATOR now supplies back checks painted

The move of DICTATOR Technik Berlin to a completely new office and production building opened up many new opportunities for DICTATOR. Products such as gate closer DIREKT, tube door closer RTS, floor spring, final dampers, radial dampers, gas springs and back checks are manufactured here. Many of these articles are custom produced to customers’ specifications. This concerns mostly the gas springs and, partially, also the back checks. At DICTATOR, however, custom production is not synonymous with long lead times. However, the galvanising process had always been a major uncertainty factor during production and often led to unnecessarily long delivery times. After all, not every galvanising facility can deliver good quality. For this reason, a new state-of-the-art paint shop was built in  the new location. With it, we can fullfil several important goals:

  • Lower lead times
  • More colour possibilities and thus better adaptation of the products to different applications
  • Environmental contribution through environmentally friendly technology and by avoiding excessive shipping

Back check – painted vs zinc-plated

Durability of the paint

Before the changeover, salt spray tests were carried out in accordance with DIN EN 9227 NSS 2017 at several laboratories – independent of each other – to analyse and compare the protection effect against corrosion of the galvanised and painted surfaces. The paint proved to be best in terms of processing and corrosion resistance, since it offered a higher level of protection than the galvanised cylinder tube.

Salt spray test

In two salt spray tests carried out at different labs, it was clear that the painted surface was much less corroded than the galvanised surface after 96 hours.

Surface of the cylinder after 96 hours

Zinc-plated
Strong white rust formation on the cylinder, red rust formation on the thread of the piston rod and at points on the piston rod, white rust formation in the sealing area

Painted
White rust formation on the thread of the cylinder, red rust formation on the thread of the piston rod, slight white rust formation in the sealing area, discoloration at both ends of the cylinder
