Hatch to access to the attic should not fall down without damping

Customer request: Flap should open approx. 90° downwards – but slowly for safety reasons

The Franz Treffer carpenter’s workshop in Sandersdorf, Germany, offers its customers interior finishing, restoration and custom-made furniture. In this case, they had also custom-made a hatch for access to the attic.

However, the finished hatch did not yet fully meet the quality standards of Schreinerei Treffer. The customer wanted a hatch that would open slowly and not simply fall down if you aren’t careful when opening it. Mr. Treffer found DICTATOR on the Internet and sent an inquiry to us on October 18th. On the same day he received a proposal for a solution. No gas springs, as originally requested, and no oil dampers, which would have been the “textbook” solution, but back checks.

Back checks, which normally prevent hinged doors or windows from being thrown open without control, now ensure that the hatch opens downwards slowly and in with control

The back checks had two decisive advantages: it was in stock, whereas oil dampers are always custom-made. And it has a limit stop. Of course, the scope of delivery also included the calculation of the exact installation points and the delivery of the necessary installation accessories. On October 25th, just one week after the inquiry, Treffer had already installed the back check according to the specifications and was extremely satisfied with the function. 2 weeks later, the hatch was installed at the customer’s premises right on schedule and in the high-quality design for which Treffer is renowned. The final customer not only received an absolutely high-quality solution in terms of craftsmanship, but also safety considerations were taken into account and a long service life of the floor flap was ensured. This is because the back checks also ensure that the hinges are always protected, as they are not subjected to any sudden loads.

Back checks

Back checks are used on doors or windows that can be blown open by wind, draft or even during normal operation. They dampen doors/windows in the opening direction and limit the opening angle. This prevents doors and windows from swinging open without control, prevents damage and protects people standing next to the door.

Various models cover a wide range of applications: from lightweight interior doors and windows to very large/heavy doors with high loads. Many models can be used in combination with overhead door closers and are optionally available with an integrated hold-open in the open position.
