Access doors to environmental simulation chambers can be very dangerous and cause serious damage

The company Weiss Technik in Reiskirchen is the market leader in environmental simulation systems. In these simulation systems, which are available in many different sizes, it is possible to test products in a wide range of climatic and environmental conditions. This includes their behavior in temperature ranges from -70°C to +180°C, in sunshine, under UV exposure, at up to 98% humidity, rain, vibration, etc. The tests increase safety and help to optimize the product. Therefore, the test chambers are also of crucial importance.

Access flaps or doors must seal the chamber hermetically from the exterior, otherwise it is not possible to carry out any meaningful tests. This is why the doors of large simulation chambers sometimes weigh hundreds of kilos. And, especially in outdoor areas, they are exposed to wind and harsh weather.

Some of the doors weigh hundreds of kilos

If such heavy doors are thrown open – either accidentally by hand or by the wind – it can be very dangerous for people who are next to the door. But the environmental simulation chamber could also be affected, as the door may no longer close hermetically because it may have deformed on impact. Or the equipment in the doors may no longer function correctly. Another risk is that the exterior shell of the chambers may be damaged. In addition to the risk to the safety of people, such an uncontrolled door opening can lead to a prolonged breakdown of the chamber, which could cause major problems for the facility operator.

Back check prevents uncontrolled opening or impact even on extremely heavy doors

The solution is very simple. Weiss Technik fitted back checks on each of the two large door leaves and to the doors for pedestrian access. They prevent them from opening and closing too quickly. Of course, DICTATOR also provided support with the calculation of the correct back check and the fixing points so that the installation could be carried out quickly and without any problems.

Back checks

Back checks are used on doors or windows that can be blown open by wind, draft or even during normal operation. They dampen doors/windows in the opening direction and limit the opening angle. This prevents doors and windows from swinging open without control, prevents damage and protects people standing next to the door.

Various models cover a wide range of applications: from lightweight interior doors and windows to very large/heavy doors with high loads. Many models can be used in combination with overhead door closers and are optionally available with an integrated hold-open in the open position.
