Heavy radiation protection hinged doors at Stuttgart Hospital no problem for the hinged door operator DICTAMAT 310-21 XXL

Modern radiation diagnostics protects health – but also requires high protective measures such as special radiation protection doors with appropriate safety

Since 2017, the Katharinenhospital of the Klinikum Stuttgart (Germany) has been rebuilt in several stages. The company HT Health Tec GmbH offers modular product and system solutions for individual room systems, particularly in the healthcare sector, and is also involved in this major project. It needed a reliable automation solution for 8 heavy hinged radiation protection doors in Building G. From previous projects they already knew the high performance of DICTATOR hinged door operators, which have no problems even with such heavy weights.

Hinged door operator DICTAMAT 310-21 XXL opens and closes even very heavy radiation protection doors reliably and safely

The doors are installed in nuclear medicine / radiology. The dimensions are between 950 mm and 1325 mm door width, door height 2205 mm. The high weight of up to 670 kg is not visible on the doors. This is due to the 8 – 17 mm lead in the respective doors, as no radiation must be allowed to leak out.

It is important that the doors open and close absolutely reliably, as otherwise hospital operations in this area would be disrupted. Further requirements:

• Connection of flat scan safety sensors that monitor the door area on both sides of the doors. If the door is in motion and a person or an object such as a bed enters the area of the door, the operator stops immediately. This ensures that nobody can be harmed when opening or closing the extremely heavy doors
• Linking the control unit with a higher-level control unit. This is because the doors must only be able to be opened when no medical treatment is taking place in the respective rooms.
• When closed, the doors must always be blocked. In the event of a power failure, however, it must be possible to open the doors manually. This is ensured by an additional electromagnetic clutch.
• Halogen-free connecting cable between door operator and control unit

As the doors are very heavy, the door operators were also equipped with fans so that the operators can always be relied on even when the radiation protection doors are used frequently.

At the customer’s request, HT Health Tec GmbH also painted the operator’s housing, lever and slide rail in the same color as the doors, so that the door and drive are optically integrated.

The DICTAMAT 310-21 XXL opens and closes the heavy hinged radiation protection door effortlessly – even if there is a second door behind it and an airlock could build up here. You can only guess that the door is so extremely heavy by the fact that it is attached to the frame by 4 door hinges.

The opening and closing area on the other side of the door is also fully monitored by a Flatscan safety sensor (small black element at the top left of the door leaf). This is because the door operator DICTAMAT 310-21 XXL has a lot of power. Otherwise it would not be able to move the heavy radiation protection doors so easily.

The DICTAMAT 310-21 XXL can also open and close this very wide hinged door without any effort. The suspended ceiling is still missing in the pictures. The control unit SQUARE 940-2 is installed on the other side of the door.
