Automatic opening of an emergency exit hatch

The fire department specified an automatic opening for this cover of an emergency exit. A solution was sought that was as inexpensive as possible, but at the same time safe and reliable. Another requirement was that the opening aid should not stand in the emergency exit.

A linear motor alone with the required small dimensions would not have been up to the task

Due to space constraints, the company Ga.Mi. Impianti SRL in Foggia, had to use a screw jack motor that was as small as possible (not a DICTATOR product). However, this would not have been able to lift the approx. 110 kg grating on its own. In addition, a single drive would not have been enough for the approx. 2.50 m wide cover; the flap might have been twisted, which in the worst case scenario would have resulted in a tripping hazard on the sidewalk in the long run.

Two gas springs support the drive when lifting the flap

The problem was solved as simply and reliably as possible with the help of DICTATOR. Two gas springs were calculated to support the opening of the emergency exit flap – matched to the opening force and speed of the linear motor (not a DICTATOR product) – thus always ensuring an unhindered escape.

Since the motor also closes the flap, additional care had to be taken in the calculation to ensure that the force for pressing in the two gas springs was within the power values of the linear motor. This is also why a very precise calculation was so important.

And the fire department was very satisfied with the solution found.

The linear motor for lifting the grating could be designed relatively small thanks to the gas springs, which support it when lifting the 110 kg cover of the emergency exit.

The escape way out must be free in case of an emergency. Therefore, the emergency exit hatch is opened by a motor at the push of a button – and the gas springs support it.
