Project Description

Back to overview

Only a WAB 180 floor spring can close the four pivot doors.

Architectural requirements (hallway for walking around without distracting door frames) and fire protection demands (doors that close absolutely tightly) are both met.

The name is somewhat deceptive: the “Crematorium Haarlemmermeer” near Amsterdam (the Netherlands) is mainly a place for farewells. The architecture helps people in such a hard moment with quietness, a lot of light and the possibility to let the eye wonder in the distance.

But here, for safety reasons, the building also has to meet certain demands. Four doors have to divide the hallway which surrounds the garden within the building into four fire compartments. Four wooden doors 2700 mm high and 2116 or 2273 mm wide serve this function. They weigh more than 160 kg. Their highlighted feature: the doors should not have a frame which could hinder passing through and disrupt the openness of the space. Therefore the hinges of the doors are shifted from their normal place, they are placed eccentrically and thus the doors close flush with the wall. There is no remaining gap.

The initially intended overhead door closer was no match for this task. However, the WAB 180 floor spring with its very high working load and its force now closes the doors reliably and safely – and is nearly invisible.

The hinged door is not fixed at its very edge. The pivoting point is slightly shifted to the middle. The door is supported by the floor spring on the bottom and, on top, one part of the pivot hinge is sunken in the wooden wall or the ceiling.

The door turns around the eccentric pivot. No problem for the WAB 180 floor spring.

It is hard to identify the hinged pivot doors, because they have no frame.

When the doors are closed, a gap of not even 1 mm remains between door and wall – a huge advantage of pivot doors.
