Drafts, security, soaring energy costs and the Augsburg Cathedral Boys’ Choir
– what does all this have to do with the door closer DIREKT?
The Augsburg Cathedral Boys’ Choir has had its home in the former Domherrenhaus in the immediate vicinity of Augsburg Cathedral since 1986. The house was rebuilt only in 1985/1986 after being largely destroyed during the Second World War (the facade, however, remained miraculously intact). The entrance is through the wooden door, which weighs about 130-150 kg and is relatively heavy. The only problem for the Augsburg Cathedral Boys’ Choir was that the floor spring no longer closed properly. Why is that so bad?
- Outside normal opening hours, the door must be locked so that not everyone can enter the building. There is an additional access control system installed for this. However, it could not work because the door did not close completely. So anyone who wanted to could enter the building just like that. There was no security whatsoever.
- As soon as it gets colder, there is a draft coming through the open door gap. The entire entrance area becomes cold and the chilly air spreads through the corridors in the building. In times of rising energy costs, this is unacceptable. After all, on the one hand valuable energy is wasted and on the other hand the choir faces unnecessary costs. The money needed to cover the higher heating costs could actually benefit the Boys Choir, and be invested in cultural activities. And last but not least: drafts are, of course, no good for the throats of singers. 🙂
Situation before the installation of the door closer DIREKT: the existing floor spring could no longer close the highly frequented door, which weighed approx. 140 kg, completely. The result: it was always slightly open, so that uninvited guests and cold air could get into the building at any time. An unacceptable condition.
The DIREKT door closer saves expensive door renovation costs
Bauschlosserei Wieser in Neusäß (Germany) took on the problem. Within a very short time, they found a solution – inexpensive and uncomplicated. Because the existing floor spring could remain in place, the door did not have to be removed and reinstalled. The door closer DIREKT was simply retrofitted. However, to ensure that the DIREKT always reliably closes the door completely, that a door opening of up to 110° is possible and that even younger choirboys can open the door without any problems, DICTATOR calculated the exact fixing points in advance. Thus, the installation could be carried out in a very short time. The DIREKT also takes the electric strike of the door locking system into account: its closing speed can be adjusted so precisely to the door that it always closes completely, but without the final impact that is often common with other door closers and which could damage the contact of the electric strike over time.
Even high actuation frequencies cannot harm the DIREKT
At peak times, the door is opened every 1 – 2 minutes. This is because up to 350 boys are educated and trained by the Augsburg Cathedral Boys’ Choir.
For DICTATOR, extensive consultation is just as much a part of our job as providing products. Here, we calculated exactly where and how the door closer DIREKT had to be installed in order to function perfectly.
The door closer DIREKT was installed exactly according to the installation specifications calculated by DICTATOR. The result: it closes the door securely at the desired speed all the way into the lock, without any final impact that could damage the built-in electric strike in the door in the long run.
