Interlock for new high-end surgery centre in the Jura Hospital Scheßlitz, Germany

When modernising the disposal structure, the DICTATOR interlock control system ensures safe processes – here it is not only about hygiene, but also about an escape door in escape routes.

The Juraklinik Scheßlitz (Germany) has undergone an extensive renovation. This included a completely new operating wing with state-of-the-art operating rooms.

Control of door dependencies

The renovation of the waste disposal structure played an important role here, since this is the only way to ensure a truly sterile operation. The structure includes three doors: the door from the operating theatre wing on the ground floor, the access door to the disposal chute for dirty materials on the ground floor and the access door to the disposal chute in the basement, where the impure material is discarded. When one of these three doors is open, it is mandatory to keep the other two doors closed for hygienic reasons.

Integration of an escape door into the interlock control system

During planning, the fact that the door from the operating tract was also classified as an emergency escape door presented a challenge. However, DICTATOR’s interlock control system has a tested emergency exit terminal especially for such cases, which is installed on the escape door in addition to the normal operating terminal. In normal use the door is operated via the terminals of the interlock control system. Should an emergency occur when one of the doors on the disposal chute is open, it is not possible to open the escape door using the operating terminal, since the door is locked as intended. For such emergencies, a separate emergency exit terminal was installed on the door. When pressing the EMERGENCY OPEN button, the door automatically opens. This triggers an alarm with siren/flashing light which can only be switched off again by a person who has a key for the reset mechanism.

There is a tested emergency exit door opener installed as a locking mechanism on the escape route door, while normal door openers are used on the doors of the chute. The standard components of the interlock control system are all pluggable. Only the connecting cable to the locking element is provided with free, clearly marked wires on one side, so that no specific product is specified by DICTATOR for locking the door, but the optimum solution can be selected for each application.

Opstelling van sluis

The unclean, dirty material is brought from the operating theatre into the anteroom through the disposal door. There is a disposal chute. However, its door may only be opened when the disposal door is closed again – and also the door for removal from the disposal chute in the basement.
The entire lock system was designed and installed by the company SES Elektrotechnik GmbH.

Through this door the dirty material from the surgical area is brought outside. At the same time, however, this door is also an emergency exit door, so that special precautions are required here. This is no problem thanks to the additional emergency exit terminal of the DICTATOR interlock control system.

Normally the door is opened via the lower terminal with the piezo push-button, which is green at the moment. If the door has to be used as an escape route, the EMERGENCY OPEN button on the upper terminal is pressed and the door always opens. At the same time an alarm sounds which can only be switched off with the help of a key via the contact lock on the lower left.

The green light to the left of the door indicates that none of the other 3 doors is currently open. The unclean material can now be thrown into the disposal chute after opening the door. As soon as the door is closed again, the door below in the basement can be opened.
